Gaining inbound links to your website is an integral part of search engine optimisation, this is because search engines see this as a vote for your website. It can be time consuming so be organized. Start by creating a folder in your favourite email client and call it something like web directories contacted. As there are so many web directories the last thing you want to do is duplicate yourself by visiting the same directory, easily done by day 54. You’ll also receive a lot of emails asking to confirm your details and check this is your email address before sending you all their deals on promotional tactics you ‘can’t’ live without. Some will ask for your ‘domains’ email address before allowing you to submit your website, so be prepared to have an email set up such as admin@ yourdomain. Okay there is one more exercise you need to do before launching your linking campaign and that is to open notepad or similar editor and from your websites own details type out your websites title, the meta tag description along with another personal description of your website (a chance to expand your description, generally up to 250 characters a fair and open statement about your website, around ten different descriptions to vary the meta keywords is acceptable – the same meta description coming from a wide variety of sources is still seen as spamming) plus your keywords that you are using for your website.
By doing this you can have ready all the details web directories ask for to then copy and paste when you submit your websites details. But here’s where it can be more useful to you than just typing in the same keywords in the same order both for directories and later for link placement.

If your website was about vieo courses then you would consider these keywords such as Free, Video, Courses, Training, Tutorials, as being the most important keywords to rank for.
From these five KEY WORDS I am able to create two and three worded ‘sentences’ I can use when adding a link to either a web directory, article directory or any other web portal I can place a link. This is known as link diversity and is one of the most important strategies to your link building campaigns. These links that you leave all over the web are known as Anchor Text Links and are the links people will click to access your website. They are of course also seen by the search engine spiders. If you were to use just one keyword phrase and place it anywhere and everywhere you could, search engines would consider this as spamming, that you were trying to rank for one particular keyword and more than likely devalue such links or worse ignore your website. So to get the most out of your keyword link building should be to have a minimum of eight to ten keyword link phrases that pertain to whatever your website is about, so using these keywords you’ve now idetified – they go something like this;
‘Free video’, ‘video courses’, ‘free video courses’, ‘free video training’, ‘Free video Tutorials’, ‘video training courses’.
The reason to do this is to “enhance” each of your keywords and not have the same one or two keyword phrases being linked from several sources which won’t add value to your other main keywords. By varying your keywords to point back to your website you are telling the search engines which of your keywords are your priority ones. Now all of your keywords are used and you will rank higher for doing it this way and aids in Google deciding which keywords are important across your website and will keep your site on theme, thereby enhancing your whole website.
You may have more keywords than that which means of course more ‘long-tail’ keyword phrases which search engine users use to type in to find a specific topic. There are two schools of thought on this that by having more keyword ‘strains’ you are maximizing your potential to being found by users who use longer sentences to find that information. I prefer the first which is to choose only eight to ten keywords that best sum up your websites content. By doing this you are keeping the ‘Density’ rate of your topic or theme. The density rate allows for the strength of your content to be more noticeable for a particular topic and is easier to manage when promoting your site.
Keyword density in your description is really just having your websites most relevant keyword at the beginning of your content through to your least used keyword at the end. Keyword density on a web-page is said to be 4% of all content will tell the search engines what the subject of your page is about. One keyword per twenty words, five keywords per hundred. Your keywords should appear in the first paragraph of introduction and the closer to your opening statement the stronger the density rate, usually within the first ten words. There should then be a ‘sprinkling’ of your keywords and similar semantic words (Try an online Thesaurus for words relating to your main keywords) relating to your keywords throughout the content and also placed at the end of your content.
Long-tail keywords are the ‘hope’ keywords in my book as you add unnecessary words in the thought that ‘some’ people type more words in their search than most and your website shows up higher because of these extra keywords you have employed. But the downside is two fold, you have one; lost your density strength in adding extra keywords and two; the volume of search from people who type long queries in a search are actually not worth the effort, besides most of your competitor’s will still show up as their density rate for specific keywords from that search are still there.
Gaining a competitive edge on your competition used to be easier when Google allowed everyone the use of their keyword tool, now it’s only if you have an add sense account. Another way to find out what other keywords your website might be missing out on is to spy on your competitor’s website to see what they are using. With Firefox you can open tools and check using the developer tool to do just that by reading the web-pages html. Another way is to add ‘Similar Web’ from the tools add ons to your Firefox browser and click on it when you’ve entered your competitor’s website. You get all the keywords they use plus an average of the amount of visitors for that keyword and its value per click in Google.
Submit your website to directories by first checking their domain age, their ip address and with varying keywords, using ‘Similar Web’. These will give your website the best start as they are more authoritative links.
Most will ask for a fee or reciprocal link (usually from your index/home page). Ignore that otherwise your own site will become a whos’ who of web directories and take the free option, generally anywhere from one month to 6 months waiting for inclusion. This way you avoid cluttering up your front page with useless links and secondly when they do include your websites link it is like you have automated the process when months down the line your website receives these extra link backs and gains a second wind.
